DIVORCE RECOVERY THERAPY IN AVENTURA, FLORIDA

Everyone in your building knows. Nobody asked how you are holding up.

The elevator in your building has a mirror, and for eleven floors you practice the face you'll wear in the lobby. The doorman knows. The neighbor who walks her dog at seven knows. In Aventura, a lot of life happens in shared hallways and shared pools, and a divorce doesn't stay behind one front door for long.

I'm Sayra Besner, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker (Florida #23215). I work with women, men and teenagers 14 and up who are going through a divorce or rebuilding after one. Sessions are virtual, so you can do this from your car in the Aventura Mall garage if that's the only private place you have this week. Plenty of people do.

What divorce therapy in Aventura looks like

Most people who reach out are not falling apart in public. They're answering the attorney's emails, splitting the condo furniture, and keeping the school drop-off running on time. What they're not doing is sleeping, or eating dinner sitting down, or telling anyone how they actually are.

The work follows an order:

  1. Who you are now. Not who you were in the marriage, and not the version your building, your family or your group chat expects.

  2. What you value, when nobody else is in the room.

  3. The boundaries you need, with a co-parent, with in-laws, and with the people who have opinions about your timeline.

  4. What's next, including dating, when and if you want it.

Divorce in Miami-Dade County

Aventura divorces go through the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, which covers Miami-Dade County. Florida is a no-fault state: the court only needs to find the marriage is "irretrievably broken," and one spouse must have lived in Florida for at least six months before filing.

If you have children under 18, Florida requires both parents to complete a parenting course before the divorce is final. Since July 2023, Florida law also starts from a presumption of equal time-sharing when a judge decides the schedule, and permanent alimony is no longer available for new cases. Your attorney handles what those rules mean for your case. I handle what it feels like to live inside them: the first week the kids sleep somewhere else, or the first holiday you split down the middle. If you're working through the schedule now, my guide to Florida parenting plans explains the terms in plain English.

I'm a therapist, not a lawyer. Legal questions belong with your family law attorney or mediator.

Who I work with

How virtual sessions work for Aventura clients

Sessions happen over secure video and run 60, 45 or 30 minutes. You need a phone or laptop and a door that closes, or headphones and a parked car. There's no commute down Biscayne Boulevard and no waiting room where you might run into someone from your building.

The practice is private-pay: $250 for 60 minutes, $200 for 45 and $175 for 30, with packages of 5 or 10 sessions that hold a guaranteed weekly time slot. I don't bill insurance, but I provide a superbill after each session that you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Full details are on Rates & FAQ. Every client starts with a free 15-minute consult so we can both decide whether I'm the right fit.

Aventura divorce therapy: what people ask

Do you have an office in Aventura? No. Sessions are virtual across Florida. I'm based in Miami Beach, and a Boca Raton office is opening soon.

Can my teenager see you without me in the room? Yes. Teens 14 and up get their own sessions. I'll explain at the start what stays private and what doesn't, so everyone knows the rules before we begin.

I'm not divorced yet. Is it too early? No. Many people start while they're still deciding, or while the paperwork is moving. It helps to have support before the hardest conversations, not only after.

My ex and I both live in Aventura. Can we both see you? I work with one person at a time, in individual sessions, never as a couple. If seeing you would create a conflict, I'll tell you during the consult and point you to someone else.

Is this couples counseling? No. Divorce therapy is individual work on your side of it. If you're still deciding whether to stay, a couples counselor may be the better first call.

What if I'm in crisis? If you're in crisis, call or text 988 any time.
